ADHD — Research provides insight

Studies have shown that children with ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorders” are often deficient in Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). By taking EFA supplements ADHD people can improve their cognitive functioning. ADHD children had up to 30% higher levels of saturated fat than children without ADHD. A carefully planned diet, replacing saturated fats (e.g. avocados, nuts) is a great start for children with ADHD.

“ADHD children had up to 30% higher levels of saturated fat than children studied without ADHD”

Adults suffering from ADHD have been found to have zinc deficiencies. A zinc deficiency is easily rectified through supplements or eating more foods high in zinc such as pumpkin seeds, eggs, whole grains, mushrooms and green leafy vegetables.

One group of ADHD children studied with ADHD had high blood levels of iron, which could reflect a high red meat diet or a zinc deficiency since zinc and iron are competitive nutrients.

Herbal Remedies such as passionflower for children and ginkgo in adults have had a positive result in some studies. In other studies, the use of herbs such as passionflower in children with ADHD and Ginkgo in adults had positive results.

So far none of the studies on ADHD have established a connection with food allergies.

Managing anxiety

Many people suffer from Anxiety. In its severest form “Panic Attacks” can be triggered by a stressful event or they may come on for no identifiable reason whatsoever.

Anxiety attacks, and the fear of their occurrence, can prevent sufferers from leading a normal life. Often these people feel that they have no control over the feelings and physical effects of anxiety and there is a tendency for Anxiety sufferers to feel overly responsible for events, peoples reactions or situations.

While we cannot control the external stressors, we can control our response through self exploration and understanding the underlying process that manifests as anxiety.

Regular Massage & Reflexology can be important for self reflection, breathing, stress management & self nurturing.
A good diet can make a difference. Focusing on improving diet is also a form of self nurturing.

Some tips we recommend include:

  • Don’t skip meals and eat regularly to avoid low blood sugar levels that can affect mood.
  • Have a wholesome breakfast such as wholegrain toast with avocado or raw muesli or porridge with fresh fruit.
  • Avoid sugary snacks, caffeine & alcohol which amplify the stress response. A good B vitamin, magnesium and calcium supplements ensures optimal nutrition for a stressed body, improve mood and relieve nervous tension.
  • Exercising improves self-esteem, and helps with managing stress and lifts your mood.
  • There are many herbs that can help with managing the symptoms of anxiety, however choosing the right herbs are specific to the individual.

Vitality, longevity & healthy aging analysis

To bring you the latest technology in Natural Health, we have recently invested in a new tool for measuring body composition called VLA or Vitality, Longevity & Healthy Aging Analysis.

What is VLA?

VLA uses BioIimpendance technology originally developed to monitor patients recovering from injury and surgery. BIA is now used by NASA to monitor the health of astronauts and is popular with athletes and professional sports people to manage dietary requirements and training plans.

Patients who will benefit from VLA may want to:

  • Lose weight
  • Increase muscle tone & fitness
  • Improve their energy
  • Age healthily
  • Effectively detoxify their bodies

All of our clients have the opportunity to have a VLA analysis including a comprehensive report and explanation of the results for $45. For more details call us today.

Nutrient highlight: Co Enzyme Q10

  CoQ10
prevents certain
heart conditions.

The mitochondria of cells is the battery that creates energy. The body creates CoQ10 to help the mitochondria produce energy. As we get older the amount of CoQ10 tapers off. Coenzyme Q10 protects the body from free radical damage and is a powerful antioxidant that aids in metabolic reactions.

Supplementation of CoQ10 prevents certain heart conditions and strengthens the cardiovascular system. In studies, deficiency of CoQ10 is noted in people with hypertension and high cholesterol. With supplementation blood pressure is noticeably reduced.

CoQ10 increases sperm production and motility and therefore enhances fertility. It also has a modulating effect on the immune system and increases the body's resistance to Viruses. In studies CoQ10 was found to alleviate allergies and sufferers exhibit lower-than-normal blood levels of CoQ10. CoQ10 may double the body's level of protective antibodies. Obese people and diabetics have lower levels of CoQ10.

Athletes & those who exercises frequently benefit from CoQ10 to increase exercise capacity and oxygen utilization. As well as enhancing the immune system during intense periods of training. For the rest of us this is a fabulous supplement for supporting energy production and preventing chronic lifestyle diseases.
